About the Department of Home Affairs :
- The Department of Home Affairs supports the Australian Government to achieve strong national security, a strong economy, and a prosperous and cohesive society. The Department is responsible for administering the Immigration Program (comprising temporary visas, permanent visas, and the Humanitarian program) and the Citizenship program.
- The Department also leads a diverse range of policy areas, including trade and customs; traveller and border security; national security and law enforcement; emergency management; counter terrorism and countering violent extremism; cyber security and countering foreign interference; multicultural affairs and settlement affairs; migration and citizenship; and transport security.
About the position :
- Under general direction, the Senior Visa Processing Officer is responsible for the assessment and/or finalisation of visa applications (including those that are sensitive or complex in nature) under direction and in accordance with priorities identified by the Department.
- The Senior Visa Processing Officer completes these duties while undertaking verification activities to ensure the integrity of the migration program.  Employees are responsible for delivering results in accordance with their work goals and will demonstrate a high-level of productivity and confidentiality and support the Department of Home Affairs’ commitment to providing good services to internal and external clients consistent with the Department of Home Affairs’ Client Service Charter.
The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
- Assess visa applications (including those that are complex in nature) for entry to Australia.
- Apply an understanding of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures to process visa applications, within service standards in a pressured environment, escalating sensitive and more complex cases as necessary.
- Liaise effectively with clients and other internal and external stakeholders to achieve work area and departmental business objectives.
- Undertake thorough investigations and integrity checks in relation to moderately complex visa applications, including potential client interviews and site visits in accordance with departmental policy, record case notes and prepare correspondence and decisions.
- Maintain and monitor data in the various information management systems and analyse trends to improve the detection of visa fraud and to minimise visa non-compliance.
- Perform research and interpret policies to manage discrepancies and provide sound advice to decision makers on more complex cases as required. Maintain and apply knowledge of risk profiles and indicators when assessing visa caseloads.
- Contribute to section work plans and operational objectives, supporting the management of resources as required and initiating work practice improvements as necessary.
- Undertake and assist in a range of administrative duties as required.
Qualifications/Experience :
- Previous experience in visa processing is desirable.
- Proficiency in computer software applications including Microsoft Word and Excel, and the capacity to learn new systems is desirable
- Ability to interpret complex policy and/or legislation is desirable
- Well-developed communication skills, both in written and spoken English and Indonesian.
- Sound administrative skills and experience including an ability to work under pressure, deliver outcomes and meet tight deadlines.
- Demonstrated analytical skills with an ability to analyse data and report on findings.
- Sound ability to prepare high-quality correspondence and reports.
