Duties

• The incumbent serves as an International Broadcaster (New Media) in the Indonesian Service, with the responsibility for producing, adapting and editing content for the Service’s web, social media outlets. The incumbent performs duties in a multi-media environment that includes text and video format. The incumbent is a team leader and main coordinator to few numbers of web editors (contractors) posted in Voice of America Jakarta (VOA) News Center and may assume responsibilities of the Director in the absence of the latter with direction from Voice of America (VOA) Headquarter in Washington D.C. The incumbent is responsible for independently planning and carrying out reporting requirements, including conceptual development of reporting material, et cetera, referring only the most sensitive and unprecedented situations and works with supervisor on developing digital goals and new or revised formats and productions methods. His/her work is reviewed for conformance to the policies and objectives of Voice of America (VOA) and to determine if the work achieves desired results. The incumbent must exercise great care and judgment in the selection and use of information and adapting standard approaches to effectively communicate controversial, sensitive and complex material.

Qualifications and Evaluations :

• EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in journalism field and to include three (3) years in web and social media management.
• JOB KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of the requirements for presentation of news and feature material for the Internet set by Voice of America (VOA),including technical requirements for uploading program content onto the Service’s internet sites.
  • Thorough knowledge of the target audience (Indonesian internet and mobile phone users), their lifestyles including use of the Internet and mobile phones, national history, customs, governmental institutions and policies, and their preferences in tone and style to insure that content and format are most appealing to this audience.
  • Knowledge of the requirements for presentation of news and feature material for the internet set by Voice of America (VOA), including technical requirements for uploading program content onto the Service’s internet sites.
  • Able to demonstrate communication between current Indonesia and U.S. news and culture and to accurately translate in both languages.
  • In-depth knowledge of the targeted area, its history, economics, culture, and socio-political development.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of American society and the changing political, social and cultural scene.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of world events, including U.S. foreign policies toward Indonesia.
• Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor degree in Journalism, Communication, International Relation, Political Science and Digital Media is required

Evaluations:

• LANGUAGE : 
  • Level IV (Fluent) English and Level IV (Fluent) Bahasa Indonesia is required (This may be tested)
• SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
  • Knowledge in depth of Indonesian history, politics, society and culture and knowledge of the U.S., especially U.S. foreign policy and culture. Understanding reactions in depth and explaining the same.
• PHYSICAL DEMANDS :
  • The website is a 24-hour, a seven-day-a-week operation. The incumbent must be able to work hours when the service is preparing and making broadcasts, when major breaking news requires frequent news updates on the site and to rotate schedules for weekend duties.
• WORK ENVIRONMENT :
  • The incumbent works in an open office setting that resembles a newsroom at a broadcast network or a daily newspaper. Constant broadcast deadlines and the requirements to cover complex and sensitive news stories create a work environment that is often stressful.
